Orthopaedic Treatments & Surgery

Knee, shoulder and hip replacements, surgery and long-term pain management therapy

Hip

Hip pain is particularly irritating and disruptive; for example hip joint pain, which is very often brought about by hip arthritis. If the hip joint is too severely affected, it must be replaced with a prosthesis. The required hip replacement surgery to insert a hip prosthesis is, thanks to modern medicine, a routine procedure.

Determining the correct surgical technique is very dependent on the unique physiognomy of each individual patient and can only be done on a case-by-case basis. In many cases, a hip prosthesis or hip replacement surgery can relieve chronic hip pain and other related complaints; a new hip joint can restore mobility and provide freedom from pain.

The hip region is one of my specialties as an orthopaedic specialist and surgeon. I offer the following hip services:

  1. Primary endoprosthetics in the hip – first-time artificial hip replacement
  2. Revision endoprosthetics in the hip – re-operation for all degrees of difficulty in the hip region
  3. Hip impingement, femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), CAM impingement, pincer impingement, hip pain such as pinching symptoms in the hip joint

Knee

Knee pain is one of the most common pain patterns in orthopaedics. Cartilage degeneration in the knee due to wear and tear or a sports-related knee injury, whether it be a meniscus tear or a cruciate ligament rupture, can follow you home from your ski holiday.

Even if it isn’t causing severe symptoms, a meniscus tear can affect your articular cartilage and should be examined as soon as possible. Knee pain can also result from varus and valgus misalignment. If and when a knee operation is necessary will depend on the severity of each alteration and must naturally be discussed on an individual basis.

Knee surgery is one of my specialties. Some of the conditions I treat and perform orthopaedic surgery on are the following:

  1. Meniscus lesion – meniscus tear
  2. Plica syndrome – mucosal duplicature, enlarged mucosal folds
  3. Chondropathy, osteochondral lesion, osteochondritis dissecans – cartilage damage, floating cartilage
  4. Cruciate ligament rupture – cruciate ligament tear
  5. Floating patella, patella subluxation, patella dislocation
  6. Transposition osteotomy close to the knee joint – axial adjustment of the varus and valgus
  7. Hemiarthroplasty, unicondylar joint replacement – partial knee prosthesis, “sled” knee prosthesis, femoral-patellar replacement
  8. Primary knee arthroplasty – first joint replacement in the knee area (knee joint replacement and knee joint partial replacement)
  9. Revisionary knee prosthetics – revisionary operations of all levels of complexity in the knee area (knee joint replacement and partial knee joint replacement)

Foot

Throughout the course of our lives, our feet are with us every step of the way.

Foot misalignment, heel misalignment, fallen arches, flat feet, splayfeet, ganglions on the heel or in the toe-joint area, overload on the foot, stress fractures, or the quite painful bone marrow oedema: the reasons for discomfort in the feet are as plentiful as they are unique. Make note: don’t wait too long for the proverbial shoe to drop. It’s better to come in sooner as opposed to later!

As an orthopaedic specialist, I treat foot problems including but not limited to:

  1. Hallux valgus – correction of misalignment in the big toe area
  2. Hallux rigidus – treatment of arthritis (painful constriction of movement) in the metacarpophalangeal joint
  3. Hammer toes, claw toes – therapy for misalignment and contractures in the forefoot area
  4. Calcaneus – correction of calcaneus (heel bone) swelling, high heel bone combined with uncomfortable shoe pressure, and pain in the Achilles tendon area
  5. Rupture/partial rupture of the Achilles tendon, achillodynie, injuries, lacerations, tears, as well as general alterations to the Achilles tendon
  6. Stress fractures, bone marrow oedema, Morton’s neuralgia – treatment of pain in the foot area

Shoulder

Shoulder pain and limited mobility in the shoulder area have a wide variety of causes including age.

But age does not always have to be the cause: young patients often suffer from shoulder problems such as the frequently occurring calcifying tendonitis of the shoulder.

Shoulder injuries and degenerative changes such as tendinosis of the shoulder or so-called impingement syndrome are unfortunately not rarities.

I treat shoulder injuries and shoulder pain including but not limited to:

  1. Calcific tendonitis – calcifying tendonitis of the shoulder
  2. Shoulder impingement syndrome – pinching symptoms or thoracic outlet syndrome in the shoulder area
  3. AC joint arthrosis – acromioclavicular joint arthrosis – arthrosis in the top of the shoulder joint or wear and tear of the AC joint
  4. Rotator cuff lesions/rupture – tear, injury or damage to the rotator cuff
  5. Endoprosthetics in the shoulder area – shoulder replacement (partial/total endoprosthesis)

Hand

Joint pain has many faces and sometimes even names with a ring to them: you are bound to have heard of tennis elbow or tennis arm, golf elbow and golf arm!

But these disease patterns are not only a problem for pro athletes.

Pain and discomfort in the elbows, arms and hands, as well as unsightly and bothersome ganglion cysts on the wrist, are very frequent problems. Arthritis in the wrist and trigger finger syndrome are not uncommon.

Repetitive movement sequences such as those that occur when working on the computer or at a desk, or the overstressing of the joints during normal, everyday work, can all be causes of these symptoms.

In my private orthopaedic practice, I am responsible for:

  1. Epicondylitis ulnaris, humeri medialis, humeri radialis/lateralis – tennis elbow, tennis arm and golfer’s elbow, golf arm
  2. Compressed nerve syndromes – by frequency of occurrence:
    • CTS – carpal tunnel syndrome – medical condition due to compression of the median nerve
    • Sulcus ulnaris syndrome – ulnar nerve entrapment, cubital tunnel syndrome – nerve-impingement syndrome at the elbow
    • Guyon’s canal syndrome – ulnar nerve impingement in the wrist area
  3. Tendovaginitis stenosans or Digitus saltans – trigger finger/trigger thumb
  4. de Quervain’s tendovaginitis – texting thumb, tendonitis
  5. Wrist ganglion – ganglion cyst on the wrist
  6. Rhizarthrosis – thumb joint arthrosis (abrasion/degeneration)
  7. Arthrosis of the wrist (abrasion/degeneration)
